Moving Out or Selling? Cheap and Easy Cleaning Tips

One of biggest and most annoying things is cleaning the house during a move. Working to remove, and prevent, scuff marks and stains on walls and surfaces when prepping your house can be especially hard. It’s very important to spot test a place not easily seen to ensure the treatment won’t cause more damage than good.  Make it a practice to organize your most used cleaning items in a case that’s easy to carry around. Create a checklist of supplies so you are prepared with everything you need and save time with last minute trips. Planning will save you money in the long run.

Some of the most common wall marks and surface stains can easily be removed with common everyday household items.

To remove marks and scuffs on woodwork use a pencil eraser – marks from wheels and shoes come off easily with a rubber eraser.

Toothpaste doesn’t just clean teeth – try it on crayon, ink and scuff marks on many surfaces. When removing stains from wallpaper test it first in inconspicuous place.  These type of stains can be seen through several layers of paint so be sure to remove as much of the stain as possible.

To remove crayon from radiators and glass, toothpaste is good for this. With a non-abrasive cloth lightly rub in a circular motion. When removing tougher stains let the toothpaste stay on the stain for one hour then scrub gently.

Be very careful or you can scratch the finish, but you can use a brass scourer to remove unsightly paint from most woodwork.

Oxy based pastes work wonders on lime scale, scum stains and dried on toothpaste.  At most supermarkets you can find “oxy” based cleaners that fizz and slightly heats up the water.

To tackle moldy and damp odors in just about any area use bicarbonate of soda or regular old baking soda.  Leave an open box in the refrigerator and freezer to remove food smells. In other areas sprinkle the smelly area let it sit for about five minutes, then use a damp cloth to clean and remove the baking soda. The smell should be noticeably diminished or gone in about 24 hours.  In place of baking soda, you can use a few drops of vanilla on a cotton ball or cloth, or activated charcoal to remove odors. An open box of baking soda in the refrigerator and freezer is good for an entire month and then you can use for cleaning so it can be used until it’s gone.

Use a nylon sock if you’re cleaning textured walls. This way you won’t leave a paper towel or other debris behind. To avoid streaking when washing the walls always start from to bottom up. Once you’ve tested in a small space for paint or wallpaper fastness, apply your cleaning solution to a clean dry cloth and work in small sections at a time.

Did you know you can remove wax from the carpet? Take and absorbent cloth place it over the crayon and with a hot iron go over the cloth and it should peel away easily. This tip can also be used on floors and curtains.

Keep in mind, it is never a good idea to mix cleaning products. Most contain either bleach or ammonia and when combined the fumes can be deadly. What better reason than to go green? Learn more about green and Eco-friendly cleaning visit: http://www.1greenclean.com/.

How clean is “clean”? Understand there is a difference between a home that is properly disinfected and a home that looks clean. Millions of germs and bacteria are lurking where you least expect them, even though the room looks immaculate.

Meats and vegetables can leave behind germs that get on your hands, utensils, countertops, cutting board, and other foods. After each use clean your counter tops and kitchen sink with an antibacterial solutions to minimize the spreading of germs and contamination. Disinfecting will help protect your family from illness, disinfect all areas to is a must to destroy germs and prevent them from spreading.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on surfaces like telephones, doorknobs, and tables some bacteria and viruses can live two hours or longer. Disinfecting these “hot spots” regularly is required to keep a healthier home.

For a variety of health issues, poor indoor air quality may be to blame. The average American spends more than 80 percent of their time indoors; where air pollution levels can be as high as three to four times higher than outdoor levels.

Home improvement expert, Andrew Mitchell says, “Homeowners often complain about dry eyes, headaches, and fatigue; as well as asthma and allergy attacks due to poor indoor air quality.
Breathe easier by following these simple strategies for reducing air pollution in your home:

  • Invest in a quality air purifier.
  • Minimize collection sources.

Whenever possible keep pets outside; on a weekly basis wash all bedding in hot water; and no smoking indoors. Go through your home and remove or reduce as many asthma or allergy triggers as possible.

  • Check and replace – Maintenance.

Regular service maintenance on your heating and air conditioning systems and frequently changing the filters will help improve air quality. This includes: wood stoves, gas appliances, and fireplaces. Good ventilation and regular maintenance are important in keeping indoor air pollution under control.
“Clients have said they recognize the worth of the investment in an air purifier immediately” says Andrew Mitchell. “With a few changes you will notice a significant change in your breathing and overall well-being.”

Bathtub, Shower, and Sink Filth Oh My

Picture

http://www.1greenclean.com/our-blog/bathtub-shower-and-sink-filth-oh-my

Clean your bathtub or sink with a wet, used dryer sheet to leave a nice shine and remove the ring.

Remove no-slip decals from the bathtub with hot vinegar. Use a cloth or sponge to saturate them, wait, and they will come off easily with a plastic scrubber.

A bathtub or shower can be cleaned with white vinegar. Spray it on, let it set for 15 minutes, wipe, rinse, and dry.

“Oxygen Bleach” Cleanser will “scrub” away dirt and rust from just about any type of surface (even clothes), but it doesn’t scratch. It is also environmentally safe and contains no hazardous chemicals, not even bleach.

Scrub tile grout with a mixture of 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup of borax, and enough water to make a paste. Spread the paste, scrub, rinse, and dry. A used toothbrush makes a good grout scrubber. After the grout has been cleaned, spread the paste over the surrounding tiles, wipe, rinse, and dry.

If you wash your face every morning or every night, use the wet washcloth to wipe the sink and counter. Doing this daily should prevent any dirt build-up. Wipe dry for a spot-free shine.

Most shower curtains can be put through the washer, then hang them back up to drip dry.

  • Dust from the top of furniture to the bottom.
  • Wipe the front and edges.
  • Follow the grain of the wood.
  • Gather dust in the cloth to avoid spreading it.

The Sweet and Sour Side of Lemons – 8 Practical Uses

Lemons

The acid in lemon juice removes dirt and rust stains. It’s especially effective when mixed with salt, which makes “an excellent scouring paste,” says Karyn Siegel-Maier, author of The Naturally Clean Home ($9,amazon.com).

Price: About 50 cents a lemon.
Use Them to Clean Your…

Counter tops: Dip the cut side of a lemon half in baking soda to tackle counter tops; wipe with a wet sponge and dry. Don’t use on delicate stone, like marble, or stainless steel (it may discolor).

Cutting boards: To remove tough food stains from light wood and plastic cutting boards, slice a lemon in half, squeeze onto the soiled surface, rub, and let sit for 20 minutes before rinsing.

Dishes: To increase the grease-cutting power of your dish washing detergent, add a teaspoon of lemon juice.

Faucets: Combat lime scale by rubbing lemon juice onto the taps and letting it sit overnight. Wipe with a damp cloth.

Garbage disposal: Cut a lemon in half, then run both pieces through the disposal. “The lemon cleans it and makes it smell great,” says Linda Mason Hunter, a coauthor of Green Clean ($13.50, amazon.com).

Grout: Spilled morning coffee on your tile counter top or back-splash? Here’s how to tackle grout stains: Add lemon juice to 1 or 2 teaspoons cream of tartar (an acidic salt that acts as a natural bleaching agent) to make a paste. Apply with a toothbrush, then rinse.

Hands: When you touch raw fish, the smell can linger on your fingers. Rub your hands with lemon juice, which will neutralize the odor.

Laundry: To brighten whites, add 1/2 cup lemon juice to the rinse cycle for a normal-size load.

Plastic food-storage containers: To bleach stains from tomato soup and other acidic foods on dishwasher-safe items, rub lemon juice on the spots, let dry in a sunny place, then wash as usual.

Clean Green for a Cat-Safe Home

3023382http://www.1greenclean.com/1/post/2014/02/clean-green-for-a-cat-safe-home.html

By Franny Syufy

We all agree that a clean house is not only desirable, but essential to the health of both humans and the cats who share our homes. Ironically though, our homes are full of household cleaning supplies which can be harmful to our cats, things like chemical cleaners, disinfectants, and insect repellents. In an effort to protect our cats from exposure to toxic substances, while keeping our homes free from dirt and germs, the About Cats Forum members brainstormed and came up with a list of helpful “clean green” tips and ideas. We have discovered that there are a number of safe products we already have on hand that can be diverted toward safe cleaning. Vinegar has a multitude of uses both inside and outside the home. Here are just a few:

  • Windows: Mix 1/8 cup vinegar with a pint of water for a great window and glass cleaner. Use in a spray bottle and use newspapers to wipe and polish. For a particularly dirty window, add a tablespoon of dish detergent to the mix.
  • Floors: Mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar in a gallon of warm water. Use to damp mop vinyl, ceramic tile, or laminate floors.
  • Cat Urine Odor in Carpet: If necessary, use a black light to locate the stain. Use a 1:1 ratio of vinegar to water. Soak stain well, then blot with (recycled) paper towels or an old towel until all liquid is absorbed. Repeat if necessary.
  • Stains on Clothing: Gently rub the stain with full-strength vinegar. Allow to site for a few minutes, then launder as usual. Helpful with fruit, jelly, mustard, coffee or tea stains.
  • Clogged Kitchen and Bathroom Drains: Pour 1/2 to 1 cup baking soda into the drain, followed by one cup of hot vinegar. Let sit for several hours, then follow with very hot water. This tip is also useful as a monthly preventive maintenance, using 1/2 cup baking soda.
  • Wood Cutting Boards: Spray or wipe with full-strength vinegar. (It also will remove any lingering onion odors.)
  • Ant Control: Spray straight vinegar (or a 1:1 vinegar-water solution) around baseboards and other areas where ants enter the house.
  • Weed Control: Spray full-strength on resistant weeds. This is particularly helpful if you have indoor-outdoor cats who venture outside occasionally to much on grass. Also use to kill grass and weeds in cracks in your driveway or sidewalk.

When you begin ask, “Is this clutter or not?”  Don’t let the size of the project deft you mentally.  You can do this without cold feet, emotional ties or guilt.  Be ruthless!  Be strong! Not really but there will be beloved and cherished items that will bring you warm and fussy feelings.  We will talk about these items later, but they should still be scrutinized under these same procedures. http://www.1greenclean.com/1/post/2014/01/how-do-you-know-what-crap-is-junk.html
