Fashion – that magic word that get items off the rack and into your already over-packed closet.  Not to mention there is just never enough room for those 50% off sales and end of the season mark-downs.  Those perfect shoes with bag to match.  Face it, you bought it all.  How many shoes, scarves, hats, jeans, does one person really need?  Since there is no reasonable answer to that, I will show you an approach to manage what you have.
Time to pre-plan.  You want to start with an idea of how you want your closet to look. Search online for closet looks and styles, magazines and home make-over and DIY shows can give you inspiration.  One popular strategy is use a closet cubby.  (A square shaped that sits on the floor of the closet.  It has multiple square slots to place shoes in for storage.) Or purchase plastic shoe containers.  On the outside of the container write a description of the shoe on a slip of paper and tape it to the outside of the containers. For your clothing you should get clothing hangers that are all the same to hang your clothing.  There are many space saving items – belt hangers, skirt hangers, hanging organizers, on the market that you can use to organize your closet.  Pick the style that best suites you and your overall look.  Consider all the items you are organizing with containers so you have enough on-hand at the time you begin the project.
For paper items you are planning to keep need to be organized at this time too.  You can purchase a filing system that will take up minimal space, but will hold all your documents in one place.  If you need more than one that is fine too.  Manila folders can be labeled and place in manner you choose.
Some paper filing ideas:

  • By month – January through      December each in a different folder
  • By year – beginning in a      specified year or years – 2010-2011, 2014
  • By subject  – “2013 Tax Return Files”, “Dead Lead      Files”
  • By business – business      name, The Jones Corporation

You are now ready to begin.

Step 1 – Completely empty your closet.  You will have an unobstructed view of your working area.  This will also put every item in front of you to choose a final place for it as you sort.

Step 2 – Start sorting through the pile that came out of your closet.  Create the following piles.

  • Storage (seasonal items)
  • Donation
  • Closet
  • Trash
  • Repurpose
  • Give away Step 3 – Start selecting items from the pile to begin to sort through.  This will ensure that each item would have gone through your hands and give you the opportunity to make a decision on each of item.  For the items you have chosen to keep, create a space for it and items like it in your closet. Step 4 – Next you want to go through your donation items.  You only want to donate clothing and other items that are stain free and still in good wearable or serviceable condition. Step 5 – Storage will be the seasonal clothing.  Now depending on the size of your closet a reusable plastic totes, plastic bins, or space saving items may be considered.  Label the outside of the container.  For example: “Seasonal – sweaters and turtlenecks” Step 6 – Trash.  Any items that are broken or stained or can no longer serve the purpose it was intended for feel no guilt in throwing it out.  Check with the trash removal or bulk trash service providers in your area to find out the procedures on trash and bulk item disposal; and what items are considered bulk.  Step 7 – Repurpose items that you can see a clear and necessary use for.  T-shirts that are ripped and stained can be used to clean with. You have now completed cleaning out your closet!  Congratulation!  Since you have gone over each item you have gained control.  Fashionable new looks and creations can be made with great pieces you already had.  You donated some really nice clothes that someone else would wear for sure and gained more space in your closet.   ~ Here’s to organization and space in your closet.
