5 Quick Clutter Reducing Tips You May Not Have Thought Of

We are all in a time crunch it seems these days.  With the never-ending demands on your time how do you stay ahead of the curve?  By doing a little more each day to remove clutter you save cleaning time.  Cleaning does not always need to take hours when you begin to think E.C.O.  You will be amazed how 15 minutes of straightening-up a couple times a week will make your home look and saves you time during your regular cleaning routine.

Here are some ideas to get you started on the path to being clutter free and gain more of your valuable time.  I know you have more, post them below.  We like sharing tips.

  1. Pass along your subscription to publications you no longer read by calling the subscription department and change the name and address to have it delivered to someone else like a friend or family member.
  2. Hang photographs on the wall to minimize tabletop clutter, preserve furniture longer, and save on cleaning time.
  3. Keep a pair of scissors in the car and kitchen.  They are a huge time-saver when opening bags, cutting scallions, roadside emergencies, or opening bakery boxes tied with string.  They travel better than a knife.
  4. Clean out your closet twice a year to support a local homeless shelter or friend them along. Not only will you have more closet space you may save money by adding your new-found fashions.
  5. If you open and read all of your mail daily, you will save a pile up on dinner table.

Make double use of your time by organizing and straighten up the coat closet while waiting for the school bus; clean and sort kitchen counters while talking on the phone.

Delegation saves you time and covers more ground.  Teach children from a young age if they can pull out toys they can put toys away.  After they take off dirty clothes show them where they go to be washed.  Children can be taught o dust, make their beds, fold laundry, vacuum, sweep and load the dishwasher.  Enlist teens to head up the larger jobs.  Trust them, they can handle it.

Spring Cleaning…Forget About It!

Helpful Hints

Forget a complete home Spring cleaning.  Clean as needed.  Set aside two hours once or twice a week for a family cleaning night.  Plan ahead and make a list of all the tasks you want to complete and where.  Write one task and the location on a slip of paper until all the tasks are in the bowl.  Each person takes a turn picking until the bowl is empty.

This is a great way to make cleaning fun for younger children and it save you time by not carrying all the home maintenance responsibility.

9 Tips for Professional Ironing Results

ironing, pressing shirtBy Linda Nelson

9 Ironing Tips for Professional Results:

  1. Make sure your iron is hot enough for your fabric but not hotter. A too cool iron will not remove all the wrinkles, and one that is too hot can scorch or otherwise damage your fabric. Delicate fabrics may need to be ironed using a press cloth. A clean white flour-sack dishtowel will work.
  2. Use spray starch for extra crispness, but be aware that a heavily starched shirt may wrinkle more when worn and be uncomfortable as well. Use a light touch with spray starch for best results.
  3. Take your time. Hurrying can cause you to make mistakes.
  4. Keep a spray bottle of water handy. If you accidentally iron in a big wrinkle, lightly spray it with water, wait a minute or so and iron the area again.
  5. Keep the iron moving every few seconds when it’s on the fabric. You don’t want to scorch or burn a hole in your shirt.
  6. Don’t press a shirt that is not clean. Ironing a stain may set it in.
  7. Use the tip of the iron to work around buttons and the placket on the sleeves.
  8. When you’re finished ironing, empty the water from your iron while the iron is hot. This will reduce the moisture that remains in the water compartment. Allow the iron to cool before you put it away.
  9. Keep your ironing board pad clean and in good condition. Damage to the pad may transfer to your garments.

http://www.1greenclean.com/1/post/2014/02/no-book-is-junk.html

By Pharice Brown

Take a look at your book collection.  What do you see?  What was the last book you read?  Where is it?  Did you purchase a digital copy?  How many of them have you read from cover to cover?

No book is junk.  There are outdated copies, but they still have value and can be used for something.  Remember your favorite book?  Think someone else would enjoy?

Some books that are not current may be a little harder to find a home for.  If after attempting to donate them to a local organization you are not successful try contacting an organization like the Salvation Army and the Purple Heat.  They will let you know what items they accept and what the condition needs to be of each type.  They may also be able to refer you to other organization.  Some Salvation Army Stores collect household items, music, furniture, clothes, etc. for thrift shoppers.  The benefit you will get, in addition to the warm and fuzzy feelings or course, you may be able to use your donation as a tax right off at the end of the year.   Check with your local tax professional for more information.

Don’t forget to ask friends and family if they would be interested in a good read.  This is a great way for books to travel to different readers.  A “community book”, it will never always have the same home it is always being shared.

So post pictures on your social media page and let others know what you have to offer.

~ Here’s to books having new homes.

Stop! Not One More Thing Can Fit!

Fashion – that magic word that get items off the rack and into your already over-packed closet.  Not to mention there is just never enough room for those 50% off sales and end of the season mark-downs.  Those perfect shoes with bag to match.  Face it, you bought it all.  How many shoes, scarves, hats, jeans, does one person really need?  Since there is no reasonable answer to that, I will show you an approach to manage what you have.
Time to pre-plan.  You want to start with an idea of how you want your closet to look. Search online for closet looks and styles, magazines and home make-over and DIY shows can give you inspiration.  One popular strategy is use a closet cubby.  (A square shaped that sits on the floor of the closet.  It has multiple square slots to place shoes in for storage.) Or purchase plastic shoe containers.  On the outside of the container write a description of the shoe on a slip of paper and tape it to the outside of the containers. For your clothing you should get clothing hangers that are all the same to hang your clothing.  There are many space saving items – belt hangers, skirt hangers, hanging organizers, on the market that you can use to organize your closet.  Pick the style that best suites you and your overall look.  Consider all the items you are organizing with containers so you have enough on-hand at the time you begin the project.
For paper items you are planning to keep need to be organized at this time too.  You can purchase a filing system that will take up minimal space, but will hold all your documents in one place.  If you need more than one that is fine too.  Manila folders can be labeled and place in manner you choose.
Some paper filing ideas:

  • By month – January through      December each in a different folder
  • By year – beginning in a      specified year or years – 2010-2011, 2014
  • By subject  – “2013 Tax Return Files”, “Dead Lead      Files”
  • By business – business      name, The Jones Corporation

You are now ready to begin.

Step 1 – Completely empty your closet.  You will have an unobstructed view of your working area.  This will also put every item in front of you to choose a final place for it as you sort.

Step 2 – Start sorting through the pile that came out of your closet.  Create the following piles.

  • Storage (seasonal items)
  • Donation
  • Closet
  • Trash
  • Repurpose
  • Give away Step 3 – Start selecting items from the pile to begin to sort through.  This will ensure that each item would have gone through your hands and give you the opportunity to make a decision on each of item.  For the items you have chosen to keep, create a space for it and items like it in your closet. Step 4 – Next you want to go through your donation items.  You only want to donate clothing and other items that are stain free and still in good wearable or serviceable condition. Step 5 – Storage will be the seasonal clothing.  Now depending on the size of your closet a reusable plastic totes, plastic bins, or space saving items may be considered.  Label the outside of the container.  For example: “Seasonal – sweaters and turtlenecks” Step 6 – Trash.  Any items that are broken or stained or can no longer serve the purpose it was intended for feel no guilt in throwing it out.  Check with the trash removal or bulk trash service providers in your area to find out the procedures on trash and bulk item disposal; and what items are considered bulk.  Step 7 – Repurpose items that you can see a clear and necessary use for.  T-shirts that are ripped and stained can be used to clean with. You have now completed cleaning out your closet!  Congratulation!  Since you have gone over each item you have gained control.  Fashionable new looks and creations can be made with great pieces you already had.  You donated some really nice clothes that someone else would wear for sure and gained more space in your closet.   ~ Here’s to organization and space in your closet.

Do This at Least Twice a Year. Are You Behind?

Cleaning out your closet can shine a new light on your regular rotation.  You could discover items you have not seen since you brought them home. So, those shoes that you could not pass up because they were on SALE.  The handbag was a must because; in the store it looked so good on your shoulder while you were trying the shoes on.  Still has the tag on it.  Yep, this will be going into the rotation!   Then there are those other shoes.  You may have worn them a few times, but you know the chances of you wearing them again are slim to none.  So let us talk about donation.

Donating gently used or still serviceable items can do so much good.  Let it find a new home.  Donation could be done a few ways.  You can also consider a nonprofit organization like a woman’s and homeless shelters, organizations that provide professional business clothing such as; suites for men and women job-seekers.  Gently worn clothing would have a brand new life thanks to you – you can’t go wrong. Think about all the space you will gain.

Don’t forget, just giving your fashions to a friend(s); you know they would love you forever. Maybe every six months set a date on your calendar so you don’t miss it.  Set a reminder a week in advanced so you can prepare properly.  To be prepared visit our article, “Step-by-Step  – Time to Organize Your Closet”.   Make sure to contact the recipient of your donations to find out their preferred method.

5 Ways to Decide If It Needs a New Home

  1. If you have not been able to wear it in months. – Donate
  2. If you just know you are not going to wear it. – Donate
  3. Is it stained, torn, broken, outdated? – Trash
  4. Do you have a friend you think could use it. – Give it away
  5. Consider donation for a tax write off on items that you have no use for.
